GPG Digital Facility & Asset Management 2021

This guide explains the importance of the digital transformation in asset management and FM, and also provides an overview of BIM and its applications in digital asset management. The purpose of this guide is to present material that will be used directly by facilities managers to increase the use of BIM-based technologies in the implementation or improvement of asset management systems within their organisations.

The guide was developed to provide advice on the transition to digital asset management across the housing, building and transport infrastructure sectors. It is targeted towards personnel involved in the implementation of asset management. This guide covers:

  • The process of establishing or reviewing an asset management system by consulting stakeholders on the information that is already available and the results required from the asset management system.
  • The methods used to gather the information required to move from the current state of knowledge to a full system – from the worst-case scenario of not having any reliable data (through the use of traditional 2D contract documentation when retrieving data from poorly structured BIM files), through to well-defined and well-managed BIM to meet the full asset requirements.

While the guide was developed in the context of facilities operations, it has been structured to support the requirements of a wide range of users. It can be read as a comprehensive report or used as a reference tool for its stand-alone elements.

The Good Practice Guide on Digital Facility & Asset Management is a joint publication by the Facility Management Association of Australia (FMA) and the Sustainable Built Environment National Research Centre (SBEnrc).
